Products & Services
A Bird Store Takes OffIn 1981, Jim Carpenter combined his retail experience with his avid enjoyment of nature and backyard birdfeeding to open the first Wild Birds Unlimited store in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Though this retail concept had never been attempted in a serious way, Jim soon discovered a great demand for a store where people could purchase high-quality items to attract backyard birds. Customers were eager to talk about their hobby or their latest bird sighting.
With several people intrigued with the idea of owning a shop like Wild Birds Unlimited, Jim decided to franchise the concept. Two years later, the first franchised location opened, starting a successful movement that has transformed into more than 300 stores throughout the United States and Canada.
Training & Support
The Wild Birds Unlimited Franchise Support Center staff members are the behind-the-scenes people. Together, they have more than a century's worth of retail experience to assist our stores. They specialize in turning obstacles into opportunities for every one of our franchise store owners.
Our Franchise Support Center, located in Carmel, Indiana (an Indianapolis suburb) provides assistance in every aspect of the retail business; including site selection and lease negotiation, purchasing, retail operations, marketing, information systems, human resources, training and communications.

Are You a Good Fit for Wild Birds Unlimited?
Start-up costs generally range from $99,534 to $145,836 depending on location, store size, rental rates, availability of capital and the time of year the store opens. In addition, our franchise store owners pay an ongoing royalty fee of 4 percent of gross sales, and 0.5 percent of gross sales capped at $2,500 per year, to the Wild Birds Unlimited Advertising Fund.We look for owners who share our goal - bringing people and nature together.
